You're what? You're changing careers at 50? You're going from championing cybersecurity to championing what--kindness? What are you thinking?
Those are questions that a lot of my friends have had. I've been in the information security/cybersecurity arena for the past 15 years with 4 years of network engineering and network security prior to that and 3 years in windows administration before that. I have an MS in network security. I have multiple certifications. Why on earth would I want to walk away from that, especially when cybersecurity is the hot topic of the day in the business world?
For me, it wasn't a hard decision. Because of personal experiences which I won't get into here, I've always had a tender heart for people and had the desire to touch hearts and change lives. Sure I've had a positive impact in the cybersecurity arena. I've been able to help a lot of companies improve their risk management strategies and increase their security awareness. I've met a lot of wonderful people and, for the most part, had a positive impact through interpersonal relationship building. I say for the most part because I'm not going to claim a perfect record, but I've had some good success.
The truth is, however, and everyone in the cybersecurity world knows this, when it comes to being the cybersecurity SME, you're the one that everybody loves to hate. They don't hate you personally, at least most of the time. They just hate what you represent. No one wants to deal with cybersecurity. They deal with it because they have to, not because they want to.
I've dealt with that love/hate relationship for a long time and for just as long I've been trying to figure out a way to do what I really wanted to do, to have a positive, life-changing impact on people and pay the bills at the same time. It's been a long time coming, but now I've figured out how.
I am committed to being The Kindness Giver for the rest of my life. We are facing an exponential displacement and erosion of light, love, unity, and peace in our troubled world. They are being displaced and eroded by darkness, hate, divisiveness, and contention.
Kindness isn't the entire solution for restoring light, love, unity, and peace, but it goes a long way and I am totally obsessed with spreading the message of kindness!
But Why The Obsession
But why am I so obsessed with spreading kindness. I have been tremendously blessed throughout my life by amazing kindness givers, especially during some extremely difficult family challenges. Above all, my mother stands out as the quintessential kindness giver.
When I was a little boy we used to go on long walks and my mother would point out different flowers along the way. Whenever we came to a rose bush we would stop and smell the roses. She taught me that no matter what happens in life, always take the time to stop and smell the roses. In other words, remember the important things and treat others with love and kindness. In writing my book and in making a total career change dedicated to spreading kindness, I am striving to honor her memory and bless others as she blessed me. I also honored her with my logo. Every time I see it, I think of her and want to be the good man she raised me to be!
Yes, But How is Spreading Kindness Profitable?
That's great, but how does spreading kindness pay the bills. To do that I have done, am doing, and will do the following:
Authored a book called "The Kindness Givers' Formula" - you can check it out here - https://amzn.to/2NLIrUm
I've founded, along with Elia Gourgouris and the amazing Elgin Cahill, Kindness Hunters International (KHI), LLC, dedicated to seeking out and sharing the stories of wonderful people who've had some real challenges that they've used as stepping stones to building organizations that are blessing other people's lives. We will be sharing their stories through a Reality TV show called Kindness Hunters - hosted with the Elia Gourgouris and the amazing Barbara Brooks - stay tuned for more information.
I'm writing a weekly column for our local newspaper, The Voice of Muscatine called the Kindness Corner
KHI has joined World Kindness USA and I will be serving as a Goodwill Ambassador and teaching their corporate and community kindness courses.
In the process of working out a weekly radio show sharing human interest stories inspired by kindness through KWPC and its sister stations in both Iowa and North Carolina to begin with and, when successful, broadcast throughout the United States.
I've created the YouTube Channel linked below to share simple Daily Dose of Kindness Videos!
I will soon be broadcasting the Unleash Kindness podcast.
All of these actions offer different revenue streams.
Will it be easy? No. I'm working long hours. However, because it is a subject I'm obsessed with and brings me tremendous joy, the hours fly by!
Will it be worth it? Absolutely!
Lots going on!
Now. I recognize that the majority of you, my friends, cannot dedicate yourselves to kindness giving in the way I am. However, everyone can take the time to be Kindness Givers each day. Every act makes a difference, not only for those you serve, but also for you! What will you do today to #unleashkindness?
